"A Unique Vintage Lakefront Bed and Breakfast Estate with 21st Century Accommodations" |
Welcome to THE GRANGE AT STAG HOLLOW in Niagara on the Lake Ontario
Canada |
General Description
Magnificently situated right on Lake Ontario and considered one of the best bed and breakfasts in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
A welcome change from the hotel scene [this] exquisite B&B offered us local flavour, gracious accommodation and a genuine home-away-from home experience. ...Homefront (your magazine for design and quality living) summer 2005
We are delighted to be continuously featured on prestigious and historical house tours. An elegant 17 minute drive from Niagara Falls.
The Grange at Stag Hollow in Niagara-on-the-Lake is a wonderful, vintage two acre estate right on Lake Ontario in a part of this historic Niagara region and wine country that very few visitors ever see. This century home built circa 1898 was accidentally discovered by the present owners while on a driving tour. Hidden for almost twenty-five neglected years behind locked gates and overgrown trees, the house has been lovingly restored right down to the antique, wide pine plank floors, crown moldings and high ceilings. The spacious light-filled rooms are alive once more with colour and warmth. Your hosts, the Thornbers, have brought years of professional design experience to this wonderful home. Coupled with the skills and knowledge of local tradesmen and craftsmen, the result has been described by everyone as “breathtaking”, “gorgeous” and “unbelievable”.
After years of travel and living abroad, your hosts decided to settle in Niagara-on-the-Lake and offer visitors and guests to this historic area the same hospitality, charm and warmth that they have so often experienced and appreciated on their travels. Each of the three guest suites have all been designed to have comfortable armchairs, tables, reading lamps and fireplaces and to be further enhanced with custom made draperies, antiques, oil paintings and selections from their collection of botanical prints. There is a guest lounge and guest refrigerator and an ice maker. Because of the incredible views of Lake Ontario, each room has French doors and windows that open onto the views. Guests enjoy experiencing the antique country charm of the three bedrooms by changing their room choices on repeat visits. The bedrooms have been described by guests as “rooms you hate to leave” and “rooms you would love to own”.
Right on Lake Ontario, The Grange sits above a hollow and creek that shelters the local deer when they leave the vineyards and orchards to drink at the creek. The estate has been known as Stag Hollow because of one deer who always stood on the top of the hill and watched out for the other deer. This lonely sentinel has since disappeared but the deer still occasionally come back to Stag Hollow to drink. A life size bronze statue of the stag now sits on the spot where he always stood. Rub his nose for good luck and sit on his back for a fabulous photo op. with the lake in the background.
On clear days there are unparalleled views of the Toronto city skyline. If you noticed the spectacular sunset on the welcome page of this web site, the photo could have been taken from this garden. Lakers and freighters all pass by on their approach to the world famous Welland Canal and hundreds and thousands of waterfowl migrate by seasonally and amuse guests while diving and performing acrobatically in the lake. There are paths to follow and steps to the secluded cove. There is even a secret room that was used by bootleggers and rum runners during prohibition.

Breakfast
Several of Niagara-on-the-Lake's executive chefs and restaurateurs have enjoyed the experience of cooking in the Grange's kitchen as well as enjoying Philip's innovative dishes. A gourmet breakfast is served each morning at an antique table in a magnificent room with a slate floor overlooking Lake Ontario. The breakfast service is fine china with silver and linen. Complete with a huge old brass chandelier, high ceilings, open hearth fireplace and surrounded with French doors that soar from floor to ceiling, the experience is baronial and unique. Breakfast dishes vary daily and you can always expect a creative and delicious breakfast: asparagus (in season) served en croute with a delicious sauce citron, baked eggs in a basket with bacon, home made fruit dumplings with fresh butter and castor sugar, light, home made Czech dumplings with eggs and bacon a la stratta, French Canadian tortiere with home made chutney and green salad, fruit or mushroom crepes with original sauces and amazing breakfast pasta dishes. Both your hosts have enjoyed cooking and baking around the world and are delighted to share their experiences and dishes with you. At Christmas time, originally designed and home baked gingerbread creations such as trains, boats and carousels fill the kitchen and one's senses. These unusual creations are donated to local charities as fund raisers.

Local Attractions
The Grange at Stag Hollow is an old estate picturesquely situated right on Lake Ontario amidst the theatre towns, vineyards, fruit orchards, golf clubs and other historic sites of Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara. We are a few minutes drive from the old town on one of the very private Firelanes and never more than a few minutes from all the surrounding attractions listed above.
Guests of The Grange enjoy watching the huge Lake freighters entering and leaving the Welland Canal at Port Weller which is visible from our pier and a few minutes drive to the west. The Welland Canal is the most extensive man-made canal in the world.
We are home to many water fowl. In winter, dozens to hundreds of diving ducks gather each day in the lake in front of the house: King Eiders, Buffleheads, and varieties of Scaups, Scoters and Mergansers. The Grange is exceptional for small wedding parties of up to six people. Brilliant photo opportunities and a memorable wedding brunch can be arranged.
Special event weekends are also available to celebrate holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
In season, we are surrounded with open air fruit and vegetable kiosks and Thursday and Saturday farmers’ markets.
Your hosts are very active in their community and will gladly help you plan your itinerary with suggestions and brochures outlining everything from golfing, berry picking, wine tasting, theatre, dinner cruises and much more. Bike, walk, read, or sit by the cove and contemplate the lake. The Grange offers elegance, tranquility and reflection while being right in the middle of all the attractions of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The Grange is the destination point for many discerning visitors to Niagara-on-the-Lake.
We look forward to your visit and meeting you.
